Camp Descriptions

There are several Mad Science Camps to choose from. Check out the descriptions below and see which ones are perfect for you! Every day a new topic is presented in our camps. One day does not build upon another and the topics are presented in no particular order. There are many additional experiments and activities not listed in the descriptions and not all of the experiments may be presented in half day camps due to time constraints. The descriptions are intended to provide a brief overview of what the camp days entail.

Themes include:

Ancient Adventures and Buried Bones

Unearth the past in this archaeology and paleontology camp. Dig into the physical remains left behinde by people and animals long ago. Learn how fossils were created. Make your own fossil replicas, including a Velociraptor claw, a T-Rex tooth, and an amber time capsule. Indentify ancient fossils, including some from Ohio. Explore human history by examining the objects that ancient peoples left behind. Delve into the mysteries of the lost city of Pompeii. Participate in a mock archaeological dig and attempt to solve an ancient mystery. Preserve genuine artifacts and take home an ancient coin you cleaned with modern technology!

Daily Topics:

The Land Before Time, Can You Dig It? Pieces of Our Past,

Buried Bones, Ancient Artifacts

Fun-gineering, Mix-Ups and More!

This crazy, mixed up camp is packed full of all kinds of exciting science exploration from start to finish. Spend some time learning the fundamentals of engineering then team up with fellow campers to create, build and test structures, bridges and even a 5 foot geodesic structure that you can climb through! Did you know that you use simple machines countless times in a given day? You will get to have hands-on fun with all sorts of levers, pulleys, catapults and mega-pinchers! Ever wonder how pictures are developed? We will show you how! Finally, become an ornithologist and discover some unique characteristics of birds and dissect owl pellets to see the types of things they eat. Then we will shift gears and enter the world of chemical reactions as you make sidewalk chalk, bath fizzers, and even a tie-dyed T-shirt that you design!

Daily Topics:

Birds and the Beasts, Crazy Chemistry, Junior Engineers,

Machine Mania, and Shutterbugs

Camp Eureka - The Inventor's Camp!

Creative Contraption Warning! This is a camp designed by you—the Inventor! Each day you’ll be given a series of challenges which must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all – your mind. With a little bit of ingenuity you’ll construct catapults and forts and then lay siege, fabricate a winning Egg Drop design, and assemble a working light saber to take home. While Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, this camp is 100% fun!

Daily Topics Include:

Rock Paper Scissors, Shipwrecked, Star Wars?,

Think Fast, and Whiz Kidz

Go inside a scientist's lab and discover the secrets you've always wondered about. Electroplate a penny and a nickel, make a battery with a lemon and experiment with chemical bonds. Take a very close (and unique) look at all of the components that make up our cells and learn their rolls and how they all work together to make up wonderful YOU! Then we will take a journey through the organ trail and see what's cool about things like muscles, bones and organs. Round out the week as you arrive at camp just in time to use your forensic skills to help solve the "Great Ice Cream Caper"!

Daily Topics:

At the Scene of the Crime, Cell City, Chemical Counting,                    Organ Trail, Radical Reactions

NASA: Journey Into Outer Space

From our Earth's atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, campers are sent on a quest for exploration! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flights, the challenges of space travel, and participate in an actual rocket launch!

Daily Topics:

Astronaut-in-Training, Earth and Beyond, Eye on the Sky,

Solar Launch, Space Voyage

Forensics Academy

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to sharpen your special operative skills as you learn about the secret world of espionage! The key to being a great spy is your ability to use science to "sniff" out your suspects and uncover their secrets. During this exciting camp you will use spy gear like metal detectors and motion sensors, learn the art of listening and observation and how to analyze evidence with chemistry. Grab your magnifying glass and let's get going!

Daily Topics:

Discover Detection, Funky Forensics, Science of Security,

Sleuths on the Scene, and Spy University

The World, Science and You

Spend some time learning about how science is everywhere around us from deep in the earth to high in the sky! We'll even share some tips on how to protect our awesome planet by making recycled paper and experimenting with pollution solutions. The focus on nature continues as we investigate how animals use their sense of smell to detect food and even danger and then make a cast of an actual animal footprint to take home. Speaking of feet, do you know what your toes have to do with tennis and your feet with football? You will at the end of camp! Then after learning how to send secret messages with your friends and how to decipher cool codes, we will take to the sky for a high flying space spectacular!

Daily Topics:

Earth Awareness, Mad Messages, Natures, Science of Sport and Space

Let's Get Growing (Ages 4-6)

Jr. Mad Scientists will explore the world of a backyard garden in this half day camp. They will see why sun and rain are so important to help plants thrive and grow, and then take a very close look at all of the parts of a plant from the seeds to the leaves to the flowers, fruits and veggies that many produce. Young campers will even take on the role of a garden critter as they become butterflies while exploring the tiny creatures that inhabit a garden. As the week progresses campers create a giant mural to help bring their gardens to life!

Daily Topics Include:

Soil and Seeds, Sun, Wind and Rain, Plants and Leaves, Butterflies,

Bees and Ladybugs, and Flowers, Fruits and Veggies

BRIXOLOGY Camp sets the foundation for our next generation of makers! Learn about the exciting world of engineering as a Mad Scientist guides you and your team through the construction of several engineering-themed projects using LEGO® bricks. Take on the role of an aerospace engineer while assembling a space station. Explore mechanical engineering by building boats and vehicles. Delve into physics by assembling a carnival ride, learn the structural basics of bridges and even nature’s very own engineering marvels.  A LEGO®-compatible project is yours to take home and rebuild each day. Get into engineering the Mad Science way!

Daily Topics Include:

Design Day, Structures, Fun Fair Day, Transportation, Water Works
