How long has Mad Science been running camps?

Mad Science of Northeast Ohio has run summer camps since 1998. We are a franchise of The Mad Science Group, based in Montreal, QC. Experts in our Research and Development Department in Montreal work diligently to create top-notch professional lesson plans for all of our camps. The programs are then tested and retested both in-house and in the field to insure STEM concepts are addressed while providing highly engaging experiments and activities for each day.  Millions of children in over 160 locations, in 22 countries have enjoyed our programs.

What is the child to instructor ratio?

The child to instructor ratio varies depending upon the enrollment in each camp. Our maximum child to instructor ratio is 1:10.

What ages are the camps designed for?

The majority of our camps are designed for children who have completed grades 1 through 5. We also have a "junior" camp for children ages 4-6. If you have a student that has completed kindergarten and would like to attend camp please contact our office and we will be happy to provide recommendations for the most appropriate camp location.

Are different aged children in the same camp?

We do have children of different ages in our camps oftentimes, but we have a good deal of experience working with this type of set up. Within a given camp, children are often either divided further by age for certain activities or we will use a buddy system where a younger child may be paired with an older child for an experiment if warranted. With our low child to instructor ratio there is always plenty of help in the camp so all campers have a great time.

Who are the Mad Science camp instructors?

Mad Science instructors tend to be college students pursuing an education or science degree, former/retired teachers, or teachers on summer break. Most of our instructors have worked for us in our after-school programs. Our instructors have experience working with elementary-aged children and have undergone a BCI/FBI background check. They also receive summer-camp specific training. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers’ imaginations!

Do you offer extended care?

Some of our camps that are run in conjunction with a park and recreation department or other facility will offer before/after care. Please consult with that particular location upon registration. Camps that are administrated directly by Mad Science do not have extended care as an option. Please Yes, at most of our camps.

How do I register my child for a camp?

Most registrations for camps can be handled with on-line registration; either via the Mad Science website or our camp partner's website. There may also be options to register via mail, telephone, fax, or in person. By clicking on the "REGISTER NOW" button on our website's camp page, you can easily browse all of our camp locations. If one of our partner organizations is handling registrations you will see information on how to contact them and/or register directly below the camp name. Otherwise, you will see the option to register via the Mad Science on-line registration system. Feel free to contact our office at 330-498-0033, if you have any questions.

How soon do I need to register to reserve a space for my child?

Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible, because space availability depends on how quickly everyone else signs up!

What is your refund policy?

If cancelling more than 3 weeks prior to the camp start date, you will receive  a full refund minus a $30 cancellation fee. If cancelling within three weeks prior to the start date of camp, you will receive a 50% refund of the camp fee. There are no refunds once camp starts and no refunds or make-ups for missed days. In the case of a partner camp, we are under obligation to abide by their refund policy so check directly with that location.

If we do not get sufficient enrollment to hold the camp, Mad Science will make every effort to provide alternative camp locations, or you will be offered the option of a full refund. Refunds that do not involve referral-rebates, multi-camp/child discounts will be processed in 3-6 weeks from the scheduled camp-date. Those involving rebates and discounts can take longer to process.

Can I sign my child up for more than one camp?

Absolutely! Each of our camps have different themes with unique activities and experiments so your child may enjoy them all without a repetition of programming.

Do you offer sibling or multi-camp discounts?

For the camps that Mad Science administers directly we do offer discounts for additional enrollments, and for siblings. This is typically $10 per camper. Contact our office at 330-498-0033 for more details.

My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. If he/she took a particular camp, will it be the same camp that he/she has taken before?

If your child attended a camp with a particular theme, that camp will typically be the same as the previous summer with the exception of any "updated" experiments or activities. We also usually add a new camp to our line up each summer. We encourage children to attend all of our different camps rather than repeating but we have definitely had children repeat a particular camp and still enjoy it the second time.

My child has taken a Mad Science camp before, but I do not remember which one.

We can help you with that! Call our office and we will be happy to do so!

Does Mad Science have a minimum enrollment requirement?

Yes, we do have a minimum number of campers necessary to hold a camp. That number may vary slightly from location to location because we definitely want to provide as many children with our awesome science experience as possible, but it is usually 10 children.  Mad Science tries to inform parents as soon as possible should it appear that a camp will not reach its minimum enrollment. On these occasions, we will offer priority enrollment in other camps. Contact us for additional information on camp cancellations.

What should my child wear/bring to camp?

Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun!

We suggest that you send your camper with comfortable clothing that you don't mind it possibly getting dirty as some of our activities are outside, and closed toed shoes, specifically no flip flops. You may wish to apply sunscreen. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful but is not required.

Full day campers need to bring a sack lunch and a drink to camp each day. We cannot guarantee that refrigeration is available at each site so please plan accordingly. PLEASE AVOID PEANUT BASED FOODS. Mad Science provides an additional drink and a small snack every day.

Make sure to mark your child's name on anything they bring to camp.

Medical Information about your Camper

In order to help the camper's experience be the best possible, we ask that prior to attendance in camp, parents complete an emergency medical authorization for their child. This will assist our instructor to know if there are any specific considerations that your child may have.

You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.

By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.

Mad Science T-Shirts and other items

Mad Science may offer custom designed T-shirts or Hydration stations for our campers depending on availability. After all, your Mad Science experience is not complete without a wardrobe or cool water bottle! These are FREE of cost to you and are not included in camp fees.

Are these the only locations where you will be holding your camps this summer?

There may be additional locations added to our summer line up as time goes on. Locations are added to our website as soon as they are available so check back often. Additionally, if you would like to recommend a camp location, please contact us at your earliest convenience.
